Alternative Investments
Our Philosophy
For over two decades our founder has worked with very successful entrepreneurs and senior executive clients; and yet during that time he noticed many of the big box firms offered to manage a client’s investments on their own platform through traditional securities but rarely offered to evaluate investments off platform. Of course this peaked his interest.
After some research he realized many big box firms create backend deals with alternative investments funds, or firms, to act as their distribution arm to sell the private placement or IPO. While not an abnormal distribution / sales practice the financial arrangement between the companies was rarely overtly disclosed. Usually you needed to look deep in the bowels of the fine print to find out how much was being paid on the backend of the deal. This begged the question, was the opportunity in the best interest of the client – or firm? Since most of these opportunities are available to Accredited Investors it is assumed the investor is more sophisticated and therefore understands the risks associated with investments like these.
But what happens when you, the Accredited Investor, finds a “one off” investment opportunity and needs a firm to evaluate that opportunity? Would that same big box firm independently evaluate your opportunity? In many cases, no.
At Different Investments™ we focus on being different than our competitors. But what does that actually mean?
While we will work with clients in a traditional investment management arrangement we also offer project based alternative investment evaluations. In other words, clients – or third party sponsors – can approach our team to perform a complete analysis of their “one off” alternative investment.
This means our team – for a fee – will provide an independent analysis solely designed to help you evaluate your investment opportunity. Upon review of the request if our team is confident they can provide a comprehensive analysis then a detailed explanation will be provided to the client, or sponsor, ahead of time outlining exactly what will be provided along with the corresponding fee.
Additionally, as sponsors of private placements approach our firm for an independent analysis we reserve the right to present any completed evaluation to our existing clientele for investment. In the event we present a third party investment to a client we will disclose the fees paid to our team for the independent analysis and any fee there might be for soliciting the investment on behalf of the sponsor.
To invest different we believe you must think different. Therefore, offering evaluations on alternative investments like…
Alternative Investment Options
Option 1: Private Equity
At Different Investments™ we help clients evaluate equity investment opportunities in new business ventures. When clients are presented with new opportunities they can rely on our team to provide an independent and objective analysis before making any investment. Additionally, sponsors (business ventures) approach our firm requesting an independent evaluation of their business. In this evaluation our team will provide the sponsor with an assessment outlining the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats, and funding requirements to meet the sponsor’s desired result. Once our analysis is complete we may approach clients with an opportunity to invest in the new venture.
Option 2: Private Debt
At Different Investments™ we help clients evaluate equity investment opportunities in new business ventures. Unfortunately equity may not always be an appropriate fit for the client’s investment goals. In situations like this our team reviews debt opportunities, which can include convertible debt strategies, in order to help the client achieve their desired intent of supporting a business. Clients can confidently rely on our team to provide an independent and objective analysis before making any investment. Additionally, similar to private equity sponsors our team will provide the sponsor with an assessment outlining the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats, and funding requirements to meet the sponsor’s desired result. Finally, based on our analysis we may approach clients with an opportunity to invest.
Option 3: Hedge Fund
When clients are presented with opportunities to invest in hedge funds they need to be very careful. Since many hedge funds use complex trading strategies, are not bound by mutual fund or exchange traded fund constraints, and operate under broader rules - investing in them can come with increased risk. However, with an increased risk comes the potential for a higher reward – a reward than can be significant - making it even more important to understand the risks BEFORE investing in them. To help our client our team will review the offering documents, speak with the portfolio manager, and assess their trading strategy before preparing an independent evaluation for our client. The client can then determine if the investment opportunity meets their desired risk and reward criteria.
Option 4: Real Estate
Whether it is commercial or residential real estate investors can use real estate as a mechanism to create ongoing cash flow and capital appreciation with little, to no, personal investment. To do this the investor needs to understand when to purchase real estate, the renovation / repair costs, income or capital appreciation potential, and the long term affects / benefits of holding real estate. Additionally, the investor needs to understand the associated risk of real estate before making an investment. Clients who hire Different Investments™ can rely on a comprehensive and independent evaluation of the proposed project prior to making any investment.
Option 5: Energy
At Different Investments™ we work closely with our clients to understand the opportunities and risks of investing in volatile industries like energy. We understand there will always be a need for energy but that does not mean clients should take unnecessary risks. We believe working with reputable companies and investing in current technologies is vitally important when trying to avoid making poor investment decisions. When a client requests an analysis of an energy investment we will complete a thorough assessment outlining the risks, the environment, and other items that may be present in order for the client to determine if that investment is appropriate for them.
Option 6: Liquid Alts
Investing in any market requires skill, patience, and research. The key to knowing whether you can be successful is simply knowing if you have the time to learn, skill to understand, patience to make mistakes, and the ability to do the research. This is never more present than when investing in liquid, or public, alternative investments. Our investment team tracks alternative strategies like long/short strategies, global macro, commodities, market neutral, infrastructure, and more. Based on our proprietary research and the macro economic environment, when used correctly, these strategies can smooth out the volatility in a portfolio AND offer returns not correlated with traditional broad market indices.
